Dune House

This vacation home was to have been located in Michigan City, Indiana at the peak of a large wooded sand dune. The living floor hovers above the street entrance and slices through the top of the dune to reveal panoramic views of Lake Michigan. In an effort to disrupt the natural site as little as possible, the entire house rests on a series of structural piles which would be driven into the sand, like a pier.

In line with the hovering nature of the house, existing trees can be incorporated into the layout, creating a courtyard while preserving the natural habitat.

The living room has access to the deck, which hovers over the top of the dune and provides panoramic views of Lake Michigan.
